Instruction- Silver Wheel Yarn teaches organized weaving classes in and around Kentucky and offers instruction in your home or institution on your loom(s) or our 4 harness travel loom. We also offer in home set up of "new to you" looms, trouble shooting, and repairs. We have plenty of experience with antique looms so if you have a pile of parts we can help you get it working. If you are interested or have questions feel free to email or call us. Individual rates are $25 per hour, Group rates (5+ students) are $35 per two hours per person. Travel fee is $.06 per mile from downtown Somerset, KY. Non-Profit Organizations may qualify for price reductions. Call or Email for quote. One-on-one Instructors Fee-$80 Group (2 or more students) Instructors Fee: $50 Class Fee: $150 (includes instructions, handouts, wool yarn for 2 scarves, 2 cones of Maysville cotton and a 6.5” rigid Heddle lap loom)
Material Needed: Bring a 3-ring binder, a simple calculator and the excitement of learning.
Description of workshop: In this class you will learn everything you need to become a basic weaver. You will learn about the technical aspects, how to make a warp, dress a loom, and start perfecting your technique. We will also go over problems you might encounter and how to fix them. You will be weaving a sampler with wool yarn and leave with your loom warped for a cotton table-runner. First class, you will learn basic terminology, identify the parts of the loom, winding the warp, dressing the warp (warping), loading the shuttles and basic weaving. You will leave with the best home work of all; to play with your new loom! Next class, you will learn finishing, calculating weft and warp, warping loom, solving problems, ideas for additional projects and a big question and answer session.
Beginning Knitting (Two days, two hours a day, with help day in the middle) Maximum 8 students
One-on-one Instructors Fee: $60 Instructors Fee: $35 Class Fee: $35 (Includes Cotton yarn for a dish cloth, Superwash wool yarn for a scarf and a set of wooden knitting needles)
Material Needed: Bring a 3-ring binder, a simple calculator and the excitement of learning.
Description of workshop: In this class you will learn everything you need to become a basic knitter. You will learn about the technical aspects, how to cast on, different basic stitches, and start perfecting your technique. We will also go over problems you might encounter and how to fix them. You will be weaving a sampler dish cloth with cotton yarn and leave with your wool scarf started. First class, you will learn basic terminology; start knitting, purling, increasing, and decreasing; and work on problems as we get to them. You will leave with the best home work of all; to play with your new skill and make a dishcloth! Next class, you will learn finishing, basic pattern reading, work on perfecting learned skills, solving problems, ideas for additional projects and a question and answer session.
Beginning Spinning (Two days, two hours each) Maximum 8 students
One-on-one Instructors Fee: $60 Group Instructors Fee: $35 Class Fee: $35 (Includes simple drop spindle, ply holders, and 8 oz of un-dyed Superwash wool)
Material Needed: Bring a 3-ring binder, a shoe box, and the excitement of learning.
Description of workshop: In this class you will learn everything you need to become a basic spinner. You will learn about the technical aspects, how to get started, and start perfecting your technique. We will also go over problems you might encounter and how to fix them. You will be spinning with wool roving and leave with your finished 2-py yarn wool. First class, you will learn basic terminology, start spinning, and work on problems as we get to them. You will leave with the best home work of all; to play with your new skills and spin two plys of 4oz of roving! Next class, you will learn plying, work on perfecting learned skills, washing and setting the twist, making a skein, , ideas for additional projects and a question, be introduced to the spinning wheel and other fibers, and have an answer session.
Foundations of Dying (One day, 4 hours) Maximum 6 students
One-on-one Instructors Fee-$60 Group (2 or more students) Instructors Fee: $35 Class Fee: $45 (Includes a dye kit that will dye 14 lbs of fiber with 9 different colors, 4 oz Roving and 100 yards of wool yarn that they will dye in class to take home.)
Material Needed: Saftey Glasses, Waterproof Rubber Gloves
Description of workshop: Foundations of Dying is a class intent on exposing students to the basics of protein fiber dyeing. Utilizing dyes with no heavy metals that are lightfast and eco-friendly, students will learn the techniques of hand-painting and kettle dyeing.
Becoming A Fibers Artist (A month of weekends or a full week)
One-on-one Instructors Fee-$250 Group (2 or more students) Instructors Fee: $150 Class Fee: $250 (Includes all materials from all classes at a discount cost!)
